GamCare, the operator of Britain’s National Gambling Support Helpline, joined hands with the gambling support charity, GambleAware, to take a significant leap towards improving the way compulsive gamblers get assistance. Typically, people would only contact them during the day, but now, the service is available 24 hours a day 7 days a week.
In the previous year, GamCare received over 30,000 calls. And as reported by the UK Gambling Commission, there are 340,000 compulsive gamblers nationwide, and 2 million are under the threat of getting into problem gambling. This was a long-overdue move, especially since the figures have been increasing at an alarming rate year after year.
In a statement, GamCare’s CEO, Anna Hemmings, emphasized the importance of the accessibility of the support services for gambling, especially since betting facilities are more accessible than ever before. She expressed the delight of the GamCare team with their new initiative to increase the hours of service to help further those who are victimized by gambling.
This new 24-hour service will be available via toll-free mobile number and live chat to allow callers to discuss their problems with local treatment services for specialized healthcare.
Marc Etches, the current CEO of GambleAware, added that GambleAware is responsible for commissioning National Gambling Healthline, a vital element of an upcoming National Gambling Treatment Service. He also added that their main priority is to keep people safe and make sure that support is readily available.
On the same note, Tim Miller, the executive director of the UKGC, appreciated the additional operating hours by saying that specialists at GamCare are now available for people to get help whenever they need it.
